“As a university student, I was the chief caretaker for 12,000 mice in a biology lab. You had to make sure there was food, and then once a week change the litter. That was the really smelly part. I literally smelled like a mouse colony. I would go get a cup of coffee, and it didn’t dawn on me for about three months that within about five minutes there ­wasn’t anybody sitting at any of the tables near me.”
