With a global bounty of well-travelled food available year-round in many markets, it can be difficult to determine what’s actually in season. And after a long winter of eating earthy root veggies, it can be difficult to avoid the allure of imported strawberries and out-of-season asparagus. To find out what fresh foods are ripe and at their seasonal best, visit www.getlocalbc.org. Click “how” and scroll down the page, then download the seasonal availability list.

Among the March/April options, for example, you’ll find a range of fruits, vegetables and meat entrees including apples, rhubarb and beets; shiitake mushrooms, spinach and tomatoes; beef, turkey and pork. The more adventurous might enjoy a meal of kale, Red Fife Wheat bread and ostrich.
