We're just now through the flurry of Easter holy days, and many of us are returning to work exhilarated, yes, and somewhat exhausted from the rise and fall of a redemptive four-day weekend.
While on the subject of trespass and redemption, let's talk ecology. Increasingly these days, our environmental conscience clears its throat as we choose this apple or that, consider deodorants and hair gels, purchase lightbulbs, plan an evening's transportation, or decide whether unplugging the cell-phone charger by your bed is worth the inconvenience.
Yes, okay, all of these choices are worthy, but not all of them are interesting. So let's skip the trivia and get down into the gutter. Together, let's delve into the fertile earth of shame, regret, and self-reproach.
Your question: What's your single worst environmental sin?
Tackle the question as broadly or narrowly as you wish. Your sin can be past or present, a cumulative buildup or a one-shot deal.
I have, for example, a friend who once disposed of a car battery by throwing it into a lake. While he certainly gets points for grandness of gesture, I have no way to judge whether, by my decades of too-hot showers and extravagant love of Comet (that crunch! That smell!), I've caught up to him.
Go on, get it off your chest. We're here for you.

Is the storm sewer really
By Anonymous, June 13, 2008 at 12:25Is the storm sewer really better though? Where should we be disposing of gum- I doubt a landfill-bound garbage can is the best option.

By Anonymous, April 4, 2008 at 17:33..I spit gum out on the street. And i dont ALWAYS recycle.. sometimes its just easier to throw it all in the bin. I know, its horrid.. I'm working on it though.

By jbucher, April 8, 2008 at 08:19Ah, you gum spitters should get the cane – I got a hot chunk of the stuff pressed into the tread of my running shoes this weekend. I chew gum, too, but I usually aim for the storm sewer.

By Anonymous, March 26, 2008 at 09:16I have lots to pick from i'm sure, but driving to downtown from Tsawwassen each day is my biggest sin. Sometimes when I'm sitting in that lineup to get through the Massey Tunnel I see all the cars around me and I feel guilty.
I know what you mean, Anon.
By jbucher, March 26, 2008 at 09:23I know what you mean, Anon. I've sat, idling, on that stretch of highway; in those moments, all that suburban sprawl (and the cars that enable it) can seem a profound mistake.

OK, I accept this challenge.
By greengirl, March 25, 2008 at 16:38OK, I accept this challenge. I confess: on the weekend (yes, that recently) I hosted a dinner party and in the chaos of last-minute preparations, I not only abandoned composting altogether, sending many organic things direct to the garbage (and no, I didn't pick them out afterward) but I also drove three blocks to the liquor store, yep, there and back. Bad. But not as bad as throwing a car battery in a lake.
I have to say, though, the dinner was kind of lame (I can't cook, who am I kidding?) so thank God for that liquor!
I'm sure your guilt is
By jbucher, March 25, 2008 at 16:56I'm sure your guilt is heartfelt, Greengirl, but if everyone's eco-sins are as slight as yours, there may be hope for us.
Memories of my first car are just now coming back to me. It was a 1981 Volvo DL, and while searching for a solution to a "fluid problem" (that's about how much insight I had into it) I drove my daily commute—and many more than three blocks it was—sending great billows of white and blue smoke behind me. Even pedestrians would give me the finger. That has to be worse.
