Half of the people in Vancouver travel more than 7.4 kilometers to work, half travel less. The 7.4-kilometer median makes Vancouver's commute the tenth-longest in the country, and just shorter than the national median of 7.6. Here's how the rest of the country stacks up.
The longest commute belongs to the bedroom communities of the Greater Toronto Area, including Oshawa, whose residents travel 11 kilometres to work. The GTA is followed by Toronto itself (9.4), Barrie (9.0), and Hamilton (8.3). Calgary (8.2) is fifth on the list, followed by Montreal and Ottawa (both 8.1). (View a list of all Canadian urban centres here.)
How long is your commute? I worked mine out – 10 kilometers, by bus and SkyTrain – by centering my home and workplace on a Google map and pulling out a ruler.

My commute is 22.6kms each
By Anonymous, April 9, 2008 at 17:51My commute is 22.6kms each way. About 45 min both ways. That's New West to Richmond and I work with many people commuting from Maple Ridge, Poco, Port Moody, West Van, North Van etc. with a handful of co-workers who actually live in Richmond!! Ah if only New West had some decent great paying jobs!!

By Anonymous, April 9, 2008 at 17:23My husband works next to the airport in Richmond and we live in White Rock. That's more than 40 KM each way. Can he change job? No, he can't. Can we afford to buy a new house? No we can't. Sometimes it's just not possible, eventhough we would like to have a short commute.
My commute is from Port
By Anonymous, April 9, 2008 at 13:09My commute is from Port Moody to Richmond. That's 29.6 km which equals 45 min to work in the morning and an hour and a half in the evening (on a good day). I need a new job

By jbucher, April 9, 2008 at 14:15Ewww... Yes, you do. Imagine if you paid yourself a wage for your commuting time.
But you're still not as bad off as the folks in Atlanta. Anyone catch Nick Paumgarten's fine New Yorker piece about commuting from April of last year?

I used to live in Toronto
By serendipitous, April 9, 2008 at 12:57I used to live in Toronto and commuted 1.5 hrs one-way to work! Then I moved to Vancouver and it took me 5 minutes to walk to work! I couldn't believe it! I have just recently moved to Calgary and so will see how this commute will fare. I don't miss those TO days of commuting but definitely miss my Vancouver walks- where I can nip home for lunch and relax!
It's sad to see people
By Anonymous, April 9, 2008 at 12:50It's sad to see people talking about the time of what I guess are single occupancy car trips....I find my bike takes the same time (or less) than transit and only a bit more than those fuming car drivers (Boundary & Kingway to downtown). Time is only one measure!
I don't believe the 12
By Anonymous, April 9, 2008 at 11:35I don't believe the 12 minute commute across the bridge. They must not work regular hours (ie. 9-5).
I am coming across the
By Anonymous, April 8, 2008 at 13:50I am coming across the Second Narrows - with that bridge - there is not really an "against Traffic" rule - its pretty much busy both ways for both rush hours.
But its great - sometimes I even go home for lunch!!
I love my commute - its 12
By Anonymous, April 8, 2008 at 11:45I love my commute - its 12 minutes door to door and that is with crossing a North Shore bridge!
That's almost criminally
By jbucher, April 8, 2008 at 12:23That's almost criminally short. Which bridge? Are you going against traffic?
