by Peter Severinson

Gen Y – also known as Generation Next, the Millennials and the Echo Boom – has more power and greater choices than any cohort to come before it.

We’ll tell you about some B.C. companies that have devoted plans to deal with Gen Y. Each has recognized that this generation brings unique challenges to business, and each has accepted a critical idea: in this labour market, businesses are adapting to Gen Y, not the other way around.

Sixties style start up
Canada’s 10 million baby boomers are unlike any other generation before them. By far the most unique feature of this cohort now entering its 60s is that its members don’t really want to retire in the traditional way. For many, what used to be called “retirement” is an opportunity to start their own businesses.

They got their first taste of beautiful B.C. when they hauled the kids and trailer over the Rockies for summer holidays. Apparently they liked what they saw. With retirement in sight, Albertans are tying up oil-fuelled real estate deals across B.C., with Vancouver Island their new homestead away from home.

Firoz Rasul
Heading up Canada’s association of Ismaili Muslims after running Ballard Power Systems for 15 years sounds like a leap, but Firoz Rasul is on familiar terrain. Having spent years promoting the unappreciated and often-misunderstood fuel cell technology, today he battles widespread misconceptions of Islam.
